Metal Fabrication in the Infrastructure & Transport Sector

Metal fabrication is an integral part of the infrastructure sector. Steel is the most critical material, playing a role in everything from bridges and highways to trains and buses. 5 million tonnes of steel is produced in Australia each year, and the majority of that finds its place in vital infrastructure projects.

Mild steel, stainless steel and even lightweight aluminium are common materials for light infrastructure projects.

Public transport networks rely heavily on metal components, including:

  • Railways and tram tracks
  • Rail cars and carriages
  • Wayside ladders and gates
  • Station facilities and fit-outs

Heavy infrastructure applications include:

  • Tunnels: steel arches and steel plating
  • Bridges and overpasses: steel arches and girder systems
  • Ports and airports
  • Multi-storey car parks

Fabrication of materials to be used in infrastructure is essential, as it underpins the strength of the material itself. Properly assessing and maintaining material strength throughout fabrication is vital for strong and reliable results in infrastructure.

Improper fabrication techniques can lead to defects in the material, which can cause a loss of the material strength and can lead to premature collapse. Precision and strength are both vital in metal fabrication to ensure every component is fit for purpose, ready to withstand the day-to-day stresses of a high-use environment.

What Metal Fabrication Processes Are Used to Aid the Infrastructure Industry?

At Kanyana Engineering, the following metal fabrication processes are used to aid the infrastructure industry:

  • Laser cutting – quick, effective and precise when cutting steel and most other metals. Whether you require large sheets, panels, roofing, cleats, or other materials for your infrastructure project, we can laser cut sheet metal to your specific requirements. At Kanyana Engineering, we utilise two industry-leading CNC laser cutters, the 2021 15kw Bystronic Bystar Fiber Laser and the Bystronic Byspeed 3015 Laser.
  • Metal bending and folding – our CNC folding and bending process will shape sheets of metal to the exact specifications and requirements of your infrastructure project. One of the benefits of this technique is avoiding welds which can potentially be a weak spot in finished assemblies. It’s also a cost-effective and labour-effective process. The Kanyana Engineering workshops offers the use of three powerful machines, the Bystronic Xpert Pro (3100mm), the Bystronic Xact Smart (4100mm) and the Yawei Press Brake.
  • Specialist welding – used extensively for infrastructure works. Kanyana Engineering offers quality TIG, MIG, coded and certified welders in-house, and our team has a reliable track record, including the knowledge investment and skill to tackle more challenging projects.

Other metal fabrication processes used in infrastructure projects include NC guillotine cutting, CAD + CAM services, laser engraving and etching for barcoding or tracking of components.

At Kanyana Engineering, our custom metal fabrication capabilities mean we can handle an extensive range of tasks, from structural steel to intricate railings and decorative laser cut panels. The range of parts we have previously crafted include steel frames, roofing panels, fuel tanks, industrial enclosures, vehicle fit-outs, machinery components, and other custom production runs.

Our cutting-edge machinery and computer-aided design software take steel fabrication to another level of precision. We work according to your needs and specifications, from design through to fabrication and assembly.

With extensive experience in transportation infrastructure, we understand the demands of the industry, and have experience working within a variety of contracting environments. Kanyana Engineering effectively meets the demands of public and private stakeholders on complex transport infrastructure projects.

Our Projects: Metronet-Government Infrastructure Project

Kanyana Engineering is proud to be part of the Metronet-Government Infrastructure Project, the largest ever investment into Perth’s public transport network. As a long-term program of projects, the Metronet is set to deliver around 72 kilometres of new rail lines and 22 new train and bus stations upon its completion.

Kanyana Engineering has been lucky enough to supply our metal fabrication services to this major WA infrastructure project alongside contractors at Knorr-Bremse Australia

Fabrication projects completed by Kanyana Engineering to date includes:

Loco Sandbox

One of the key components we supplied to this project was the loco sandbox. This mechanism improves the braking systems of trains. When the train brakes, sand from this box is sprayed onto the rails to allow stoppage at a shorter distance without the train slipping from the tracks.

ASU Frames

We also provided the ASU frames designed to protect and hold the electrical components underneath the trains.

Thanks to our knowledge of fabrication in the infrastructure industry, Kanyana has been fortunate enough to work on this major government-funded infrastructure project that will change the way West Australians travel. Our team performs extremely high-quality welding processes to ensure these components are perfectly fit for this project.
