Fortescue’s Battery Electric Locomotives — Powered by Advanced Australian Manufacturing

Kanyana Engineering is proud to have played a key role in Fortescue’s transition to battery electric rail — a major step toward real, practical decarbonisation in heavy haul mining. ⚡🚆

These battery electric locomotives represent far more than new technology. They signal a fundamental shift in how large‑scale mining infrastructure is designed, powered and delivered.

Our Contribution: Engineering the World’s Largest Land‑Mobile Battery Housings

Kanyana Engineering manufactured the complete battery housing systems for the locomotives — including the structural enclosures and roof panels that protect and support the world’s largest land‑mobile battery assemblies.

These units required:

  • Heavy‑duty fabrication capability
  • Precision engineering
  • Strict safety and performance compliance
  • Seamless integration into a highly complex rail system

Beyond fabrication, our team collaborated closely with Fortescue, refining designs and re‑engineering components to ensure efficiency, repeatability and scalable production. Turning a concept into manufacturable reality required deep problem‑solving and coordination between both teams.

The outcome:
A production‑ready, structurally robust housing system built for the harsh conditions of the Pilbara — and built to support one of the mining sector’s most significant decarbonisation initiatives to date.

The Challenge: Engineering for Performance, Precision and Scale

Delivering components for a world‑leading battery electric locomotive came with complex engineering challenges — and achievements our team is extremely proud of:

  • Maintaining tight tolerances while preserving heavy‑duty structural integrity
  • Designing and manufacturing a custom fabrication jig to control welding distortion
  • Achieving dimensional accuracy and repeatability across all production units
  • Embedding QC track‑and‑trace processes throughout manufacturing
  • Ensuring full material, weld and inspection verification aligned to project standards
  • Working directly with Fortescue engineers to refine and optimise designs for production
  • Delivering on schedule, maintaining critical project timelines

This project demonstrates the strength of structured systems, disciplined fabrication workflows and collaborative engineering.

Driving Net Zero Through Advanced Australian Manufacturing

As the mining industry accelerates toward Net Zero, projects like Fortescue’s battery electric locomotives prove what is possible when engineering innovation and advanced manufacturing capability come together.

At Kanyana Engineering, we are committed to delivering:

  • High‑quality heavy fabrication
  • Precision‑engineered enclosures
  • Production‑ready manufacturing systems
  • Secure, traceable and system‑driven processes
  • Components built to perform in the most demanding environments

From complex battery housing systems to structurally critical components for Pilbara conditions, our focus remains the same: quality, safety and performance without compromise.

Proudly Supporting the Future of Sustainable Mining

This project highlights the critical role of Australian manufacturing in enabling sustainable mining, battery‑electric rail technology and the transition to cleaner energy systems.

We are proud to have contributed to a project that is not only technically demanding — but also reshapes the future of heavy haul operations.
